The folk music of Hungary has been within the grasp of the Church since
the beginning of the 12th century.  But it is true that it retained the
Old-Music sound longer than that of most other nations.  The quality of
this sound no doubt derives from conventions that Sterling Newberry treats
further down in his tour de force posting.Not only is it Bartok who was
affected by that special sound of Hungarian folk music but also, and
perhaps even more decisively, Zoltan Kodaly.
