Roger Hecht's extensive defence of Previn was something which should have appeared a lot sooner. I would second much of what Roger writes - particularly about the recordings Previn made of Walton and Vaughan Williams. I would also add his recording of Debussy's Le Mer, which I think captures the ebb and flow of the writing to something approaching perfection. And - and I don't care who on the list disagrees with me on this - I also like his Rhapsody in Blue. Isn't this something which we discussed some time ago: getting musicians with a feeling for jazz to record American repertoire? But who is going to do it if they are immediately denounced as being facile? The old saying of a prophet having no respect in his own country comes all too quickly to mind. Jonathan
