Bein' in Aarkansahh fir thuh past few daiys, I missed this one. However, I don't agree that the NEJM article proves much. It has been a long time since I read it, so perhaps I am misinformed. However, they depended on the mother's word on how much she drank. People lie (or should I say distort the truth) about how much they drink almost as much as they do in response to sex questionnaires. And how to you separate prenatal exposure from postnatal exposure? Since prenatal exposure is a real "no no", women are likely to hide the fact they drink during pregnancy, or minimize the amount they drink during pregnancy, because they know it is frowned upon. Very few nursing mothers, incidentally, drink one or two ounces of alcohol each day. Notice however, that motor development is not as important an indicator of general development as speech and social development. Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC
