Permit me to add Celibidache to that list--way up front.  Except perhaps
for Eugen Jochum, there's not a one to surpass Celi for the whole cycle of
symphonies (though Horenstein excels on a couple of them).  Incidentally,
a cycle of Brahms symphonies by Celi has just hit the market in Germany
under the EMI label.  Superb!
