"What a positive image to use to encourage women to BF..." I have used this picture in my work as an Area Contact for Baby Milk Action (IBFAN UK) when talking about the issues of formula manufacturers and the fact that breastfeeding makes important differences. I have never used the photograph with either pregnant women or women with young babies when I was speaking as a breastfeeding supporter. I am all for speaking the truth, but this picture is very graphic and powerful and I think it could stir a lot of emotions, including hostility. I also think we need to take great care when using third world images to promote breastfeeding. For years that was what one saw (e.g. in National Gerographic) and I think this may have contributed to the declining cachet of breastfeeding in the west. A powerful image, yes. But more about the dangers of formula than the advantages and pleasures of breastfeeding in the west.....IMO. Magda Sachs Breastfeeding Supporter for BfN and Area Contact for BMA UK
