Fight back, Dianne! Write these clowns back that they are full of it. That if there were similar studies with all the same biases, showing that formula made from maple leaves was better than formula made from cow milk or soy, they would be prescribing maple leave formula. Give me a break. These guys/gals are *so* hypocritical. In fact, they would need only 1 study published in Pediatrics to change their suggestions. There are lots of pediatricians suggesting Good Start because it is supposed to be less allergenic, even though there are no good studies to show it, including, by the way, Dr. Chandra's. There are lots of pediatricians who are suggesting Similac Advance, even though there are no studies at all to back up Ross' claims. These pediatricians pretend to be scientists and not biased. What a load of crap. If they were truly unbiased, they would be supporting breastfeeding all the way. After all, breastfeeding and breastmilk are physiologic, and formula is a poor copy. It is not up to breastfeeding advocates to provide evidence that breastfeeding is better. It is up to those who say it doesn't matter to provide evidence that it doesn't matter. Where is it? Since when is the intervention (formula feeding) the "default mode". It is like saying: the evidence that vaginal birth is safer is not proved because the studies are faulty (those having caesarean sections are having them because there are problems, therefore there is no good control etc). therefore we will encourage caesareans sections so women do not feel guilty for not being able to deliver vaginally. Actually, there *are* obstetricians that say that. Jerks. Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC
