Hi all. In the last week I have had two different moms with babies less than a week old describe to me how they have repeated episodes of shivering; they feel suddenly *very* cold, the shivering is uncontrollable and they just "cannot get warm", even with cuddles/hot water bottles/more blankets etc. Neither have raised temperatures, engorgement, lower abdominal pain, unusual bleeding - i e nothing to suggest mastitis or uterine infection. Nor do they have a history of thyroid dysfunction. This is our winter so temperatures are lower (2 degrees C at night to about 26 degrees C in the day) but not *that* low. On the other hand, I find that new moms often apologize for being so "sweaty", they describe how they feel so hot (especially in the summer) and seem to be experiencing symptoms that resemble hot flushes. I'm wondering if postpartum moms have temperature-control problems as a result of the sharp drop in progesterone levels that occur with delivery of the placenta (leading to Lactogenesis II). Would this be lactation-related, or just coincidental, or what? Has anyone else seen/experienced this? Are there *other* hormones involved (e g lack of estrogen?) Is there an explanation?? Thanks for any thoughts. Pamela Morrison IBCLC, Zimbabwe
