Hi all, I had an absolutely wonderful home vist over the weekend. A mom 30 years old first baby 8 days old. Mom reported extreme pain and was so upset when she called Friday evening that Dad ( a rabi) did the talking for her. She calmed down and told my she was in awful pain, it hurt the wholetime she nursed. She had not planned on breastfeeding because she didn't think she would be able to. So she explained she felt she didn't do as much reading as she should have. She said that at the age of 16 she had, had a breast reduction surgery. The baby was 3 weeks early but weighed 5lbs 11 ounces at birth dropped down to 5lbs 2 ounces, at 5 days was back up to 5 lbs 7 ounces. Baby had plenty of stools and wet diapers. As we talked further she described a constant burning sensation on her breast that sounded like yeast we talked about that. I went to see her Saturday and baby was a bit jaundiced but looked like I would have expected and was doing great. Mom was a sore, cracked, bloody nippled mess. We worked on positioning as best we could. This moms nipples were repositioned way too high on the breast. Scars run all the way around nipples, are at 6 o'clock on both breasts running under both to mid way of underarm, and then back up between both breasts. What I felt was so amazing is that this is all working, she feels pain so intensely that she's had to stop nursing for 24 hours to tolerate and went to pumping. Baby is now taking breast again. And mom after nursing in my presence Saturday was able to express a good ounce out of one side in 5 minutes with M---- pump , and almost as much out of the other side. I am so happy for her, parents are so pleased. Nipples are better and things look good. Weight recheck on Wednesday of this week. RECANALIZATION! WOW. To make my day complete I opened the mail to find a gift certificate to a Nice Local Resterant, large enough that I can take my husband there for his birthday next week. This was a gift from a mom I've had as client in the past who called in tears last week, with new baby and engourgement, we talked things through and she's doing fine now.
