Below is what I emailed the Mad About You show concerning their 1/6/98 show: I was seriously disturbed by your portrayal of such dangerous feeding protocol on the show Tuesday night. I'm sure you have consultants for your show, but they certainly missed the boat with that show! For instance, do you have any consultants who understand physics? Do you know what really happens when you pour boing water into a closed container and then shake the container to mix the water and the contents? Mabel and Paul and his cousin should have had a couple of serious burns from the scalding mixture issuing from that bottle. You have inaccurately, and possibly dangerously, depicted how to mix artificial baby milk. In addition, I'm sure you didn't actually feed the baby actor what Paul mixed. Otherwise, the baby would have been screaming in agony and your show's executives, directors, producers, and (Paul) and (Jamie) would have been answering some serious questions from police officers and social workers about why (Mabel's) mouth, throat, esophagus, and face were covered with second degree burns. Or did you have one of those take-out moments? Please tell me you that didn't actually harm that baby (other than the potential harm of feeding artificial baby milk). Actually, there was nothing funny, entertaining, or even positive about any of the situations depicted in your show Tuesday night (including the vignette about Jamie's mother and her "gentleman friend"). In fact, there were several things you portrayed that could actually prove very harmful. And I have not even touched on the inaccuracies surrounding your portrayal of breastfeeding, Paul's attitude to the breastfeeding, your depiction and description of artificial baby milk as a substance that is equal to breastfeeding/breastmilk, or your (and Paul's) lack of sensitivity to a critical health issue for infants, women, and children. You lost a loyal viewer Tuesday night. I sincerely hope that the events portrayed do not lead to the actual harm of any of the human beings, or those they care for and about, who watched your show and received such inaccurate and potentially dangerous information. It certainly wasn't entertainment. Sincerely, Keitha Whitaker, BS, IBCLC
