Good morning gang! I need your collective wisdom here. Dad was diagnosed with acute phase hepatitis B one week ago. He is of Asian descent and mom and dad believe he may be a chronic carrier, probably from childhood. This is his first active flare-up that he knows of, however. Mom and Dad have a baby, 2.5 months old, exclusively breastfed. Mom and baby were tested on Tuesday and baby was also given first round of the HepB vaccine (possibly a double dose? Momis not sure...). Mom's test results came back today. She tested postive for the antibody, indicating she has been exposed in the past. Since there is no way to test to see if she is now completely immune or also a carrier, what is the consensus on continuing breastfeeding until baby's vaccine kicks in?Mom's doctor is discussing this with a hepatologist and assessing the risk:benefits ratio. They think a temporary weaningis probably unlikely. I did an archive search and the only info I was able to find (in my other resources as well) was related to giving baby immune golubilin at birth and then breastfeeding being "safe". I am assuming since mom is not in an acute phase and may even be immune, the benefits of continuing to nurse far outweigh the risks. Do we have any info on how transmittable HBV is via breastmilk in a baby who is *un*immunized? TIA, Nicki Clark
