This has come up twice now and I need some further information. A mother was
given a choice of orthocept or desigin for birth control. (Both are .15 mg
desogestrel and .03 mg ethinyl estradiol. Neither are in Tom Hale.) The
mother knows that she has other choices and asked the doctor for something
else since what we could find indicates that her milk supply could be
affected by either of these two contraceptives. The doctor then asked her if
we had "md" after our name and told her that more nursing would increase her
milk if the drug did affect the supply. (Preserving bf is not his top
priority.) I am sending the mother general b/c info from The Bf Ans Bk, Bf
Guide for Med Prof, and the info on ethinyl estradiol from Drugs in Preg and
Lact.

Drs. Newman and Hale, do either of you have any specific info on either
orthocept or desigin, or general insights regarding the efficacy of these two
meds versus other b/c meds for breastfeeding mothers? Please email privately
([log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]) as well as to the list.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Keitha :)
