I think I posted on this topic a few weeks back. I thought I would add my .02 again since IMNSHO (in my not so humble opinion) I was under the assumption that most solids are for "practice" and experience during the 2nd half of the first year. Nicki Clark said: <I think reaching for food is a sign of interest in *food*, not necessarily a sign of interest in *eating*. And I really disagree that it is a sign of readiness.> Her statement and experience with her son are perfect examples. I believe we should let the baby take the lead. Nicki's son was interested in what his parents were doing and may have even enjoyed the taste, but, was not ready for solids to replace breastmilk in any substantive way. There are more signs to look for besides grabbing at the plate. The lazy mom's way of introducing foods almost guarantees that a child will be more "ready". What has worked for me is allowing my children to feed themselves. When they are interested in and ready to grab bits and get them to their mouth, then they are ready to be INTRODUCED to solids. By this time (usually more like 8-10 mos, but, allow for individual variation) they no longer tongue thrust food/stuff out of their mouths. However, like most things, watch what the baby does and remember that mom knows her baby best and what will work out for her family.
