Kay Hoover's 4 page handout titled, "The Link Between Infants' Oral Thrush and Nipple/Breast Pain in Lactating Women," dated 8/96, states: "Freezing does not kill yeast, so feed the baby any milk collected during the yeast infection within 24 hours of pumping. If breastmilk has been stored in the freezer during a bout with yeast, it could be brought to a boil to kill the yeast." She cites Rosa C. et al. Yeasts from human milk collected in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rev Microbiol 21(4):361-363, 1990. By the way, I find this a very helpful handout. Two pages are color photos of oral thrush, nipple thrush, yeast diaper rash, how to use oral and topical nystatin and gentian violet, other remedies such as handwashing, doing laundry in hot water and hanging it out in the sun to dry, etc. There are also two pages of clear and detailed written instructions. I think the pictures help mothers understand better just how to deal with this frustrating problem.
