Here's the latest on my 4 month old with "colitis". The symptoms were mucous and blood in the stools. I had a consult with the mom last week (Friday). The baby looked healthy, happy, good skin color. Some eczema and definitely green mucousy stool. Mom had soft breasts. Had been nursing one breast only for quite a while. I helped her correct positioning with a deeper grasp of lower areola, taught her breast compression and advised her to nurse both brerasts, following cues of increased suck/swallow ratio to know when to switch breasts. I gave her a dietary history record and loaned her a copy of "Food for Thought". Monday Mom reported that baby was doing better, stools back to mustard color, no blood seen, baby gradually learning to latch better. I have noticed over these past 11 years of doing consulting work that sometimes moms who have early latch-on problems get things worked out, nipples not sore etc. After a while, they get in a hurry and don't take as good care of themselves, allowing baby to pull on the nipple, not using support to keep back and shoulders relaxed. Some of these moms later complain about other problems and wean early. This is where long-term relationships become so important. I keep reminding moms to take care of themselves, trust their bodies and trust their babies. Get out of the "medical model" of breastfeeding and pay attention to their gut instinct. Sometimes I talk about "jungle breastfeeding," imagine yourself in a survival mode and adapting your expectations and actions to that model. Sometimes that helps moms who are so caught up in the modern day expectations of huge, perfectly kept homes with 2.5 cars per household and moms who are living in welfare housing with food stamps and no family support. We all need each other!
