I had a Mom call today with a 4 1/2 month old on nursing strike. She weathered one strike two weeks ago. She has recently gone back to work. Bottle was intro'd at 4 weeks (always containing breastmilk) and baby took one or two a day since then. Now baby gets more bottles and has decided she wants bottle at every feed and refuses breast. Has not nursed at breast for 2 days even at night. Mom knows techniques for nursing strike, has started sleeping with baby, trying to get to her while sleepy, before really hungry, etc. Basically Mom has done everything right. She came through last strike OK but is now saying "how can I deal with this every week?" My one suggestion Mom had not tried was to try substituting bottle with a cup so baby gets less sucking pleasure and will seek breast (baby doesn't have a pacifier but sucks fingers) for sucking comfort. Also tried to reassure about distractible 4 month olds, phases, adjustments to return to work etc. Anyone else have any other bright ideas? Anne Merewood
