i was pleased to see bonnie's post about ibuprofen today. My Friend the Midwife visited today after seeing a client and baby. baby is in a local hospital that houses not only a lactation unit but a human milk bank. the intensive care unit nurse was lecturing the mother about the care of the four pound baby, who remains in the hospital at five days because their protocol is to use lights for a bilirubin of - yes, i will tell you - ten! this four pound baby is only being fed every three hours because of the Importance of a Schedule (turns out to be the nurses' schedule). the lecture included warnings about the baby "Snacking" between feedings. the baby was breastfed, then the mother was forced to awaken the sleeping baby and pour down 33 grams ( i am not a metric expert; about three ounces) of EBM. the above part was just rant, but My Friend claims the baby has been somewhat sleepy and reluctant to nurse in the first few days because the mother is taking 600 mg. ibuprofen. it seemed to me there were many other complicating factors. she says she has seen another baby seriously unresponsive due to mother taking large doses of ibuprofen. the BAB says there is no impact on lactation. any other opinions or anecdotal evidence of a problem with ibuprofen? having been on large doses of this drug when my daughter was younger, i can only wish it made her a BIT sleepy. to add to my above rant, which caused me to actually shout in response to the story, i found myself this evening in the unfortunate company of a woman and two children in the same store and checkout line as myself. in the store, the woman yelled repeatedly at the about 18 month old for standing up in the cart. the safety belt in the cart was unfastened. then they were in the line behind me and i had to watch as the little one dropped his empty bottle on the floor and was scolded about it. apparently to apppease his older sister, the woman (not their mother, perhaps grandmother) gave her some of the pepsi she was drinking. then because the baby was interested, the woman put about four ounces of the pepsi in the (very dirty) bottle and gave it to him. now, do you think i was offended by The Thing? of course not; i need all the humor available to deal with the everyday real world stuff. carol b.
