Kathy, I can only offer my own experience with pain while breastfeeding during pregnancy. As I entered the second trimester of pregnancy, the pain in my nipples and areolas increased drastically. It truly was unbearable. I loved nursing my children, but it became awful, and I dreaded it during my pregnancies. I cut the nursings short. I was honest and told my child that it hurt mommy. Let's nurse again later. I'd then offer cuddles, something to drink or eat. By my third trimester, my children weaned. I think due to both the changes in my milk and how our nursing relationship changed. It was a relief to not be in pain, but also a time of great sadness as we closed a chapter in our relationship. Then of course the hard work begins-----calming and comforting a child who no longer nurses! I'm not sure if this is what this mom will want to hear. Aloha, Gloria Thai LLLLeader Hawai'i
