Hi Lactnet, A few weeks ago I wrote about a mom who had developed mastitis during her first pregnancy. She was treated with antibiotics and felt much better but some tenderness remained. I had asked about pumping last time, and repondents thought that it probably would not be necessary or maybe even advisable. Mom now reports that the pressure builds up to such an uncomfortable point about once a week that she uses a small hand pump to remove about 1/2 oz of milk or clostrum or whatever it is and feels much better. She has had a fairly large weight gain in this pregnancy (about 70 lbs at eight months) and it seems her breasts have enlarged proportionly more than one would expect. Could excess fatty tissue be consticting milk ducts? Could something else be going on? Her doctor is not at all concerned. Mary Graden LLL leader Idaho
