In a message dated 97-04-01 07:23:54 EST, you write: << Because of HIV & AIDS, I think it is too complicated to have thriving milk banks as in years past. People are too scared, as I believe I would be, to use this as an option before resorting to abm. >> What a shame that the idea of milk banks are so foreign and frightening to us now. Many people assume as you do, Laura. But did you realize the milk in milk banks is all heat treated so all HIV is killed 100%? (I know Georgetown uses a temperature 10 degrees ABOVE 100% HIV kill and they can prove it) It does loose the advantages of the living antibodies and some other changes that occur due to the heat treating, but is still MILES above formula. How does Sweden do it? I have heard that ALL babies receive human milk after birth, either from their own mothers or from EACH HOSPITAL'S MILK BANK. Now that sends the right message--Human Milk is for Human Babies. Is there someone on the list who can tell us about this in Sweden and how it is accomplished? Jane Bradshaw
