Hi, all! I asked my lab list about the Salmonella question-following is the reply... <<As the enteric reference lab for our province,we are involved with the epidemiology aspects of Salmonella. We have isolated Salmonella sp.from the droppings of pet turtles, snakes and iguanas. The Salmonella sp. isolated are often of the same serotype as that of the patient.(most often children) Turtles have been especially bad; so much so that our province has banned the sale of turtles in pet stores because of the risk. Interestingly, since then the incidence of Salmonella arizona in our province(our most common patient -turtle link) has dropped to almost zero. Other serotypes are often found as well in these "pets" but subspecies3(arizona/diarizona) is common. The under 5 rule is probably because kids often get very close to their pets. Turtles often end up in the child's mouth. We have isolated Salmonella from human breast milk, but very rarely. I am not aware of airborne transmission.>> Hope this is of some help Georgeanne
