>Just for people's information: The American Academy of Pediatrics has made a >statement against swimming lessons for babies and toddlers under the age of 3 >for the following reasons: 1) They are not old enough to learn water safety >(preverbal), >2) there are more outbreaks of diarreha (water contamination), and 3) they >gulp water so it decreases the sodium content in the blood and can lead to >seizures. This is just baloney....the AAP should leave the swimming instruction to those qualified to do it. Under the age of 3 is THE BESt time to start swimming instruction. If you get them in a pool within the first 6 months (I think) babies will automatically shut there mouth when given a command before going under water. they can also be taught to motivate their way to the side and climb out. Bonnie Prudden made a wonderful/beautiful video years ago with swimming babies. She also has a book called "Your Baby Can Swim".
