Thank you lactnetters for all the discussion regarding babies needing to be NPO before surgery for a relatively short time, if at all, when they are breastfeeding.  Courageous after our on line discussion, I approached one of the peds in our hospital who does the circumcisions, to ask if we could change our circ protocols that require babies to be NPO p 6 AM -- when the circs don't get done until about 9.

She said she and the other peds would be most delighted to change the protocols; they think that babies that BF before the procedure are much less fussy before and during, and tolerate it all much better.  And could I bring her evidence-based research regarding breast-feeding and surgery.

I do have a few items for a bibliography -- do you all have any more?
