FROM: Sturgess, Frances Coulter TO:[log in to unmask] SUBJECT: closing the list/exclusions DATE: 02-28-97 19:22 EST PRIORITY: I vote *no* on the exclusions. The guidelines/courtesies are quite clear, and I do not see how it could be enforced anyway if someone wants to "spy" and is not using a computer address traceable to an ABM company. I would hope we put out enough positive info that *reps or whoever might learn something and do what they can to improve the stuff* (DHA etc) Lactivist and maybe others do try and exclude--and to my chagrin, if the restrictions included folks who *benefited* from ABM money, well I have to admit, I am a member of the American Dietetic Association and they admit quite readily that they see *no* conflict of interest in accepting industry money for scholarships, newsletters, conferences, etc--and so for that matter does the Am Acd of Peds. I don't agree with taking the money, but I have not dumped my membership, either. I am hoping that other "voices in the wilderness" will join me in minimizing such funding, but its a long way off as finding other funds is not easy. The Center forScience in the Public Interest proudly turns up its nose at outside funding, but they don't put on conferences for CE or have nutrition hotlines/resources/publish journals etc.
