FROM: Sturgess, Frances Coulter TO:[log in to unmask] SUBJECT: waterbeds DATE: 02-20-97 15:53 EST PRIORITY: The Childhood Injury Prevention folks around here are adamant that no pillows or waterbeds or even fat comforters be used for sleeping infants as they have suffocated on them when too young to turn over (or back over) themselves and shape themselves to an infants face/body. Granted not all infants have or will suffocate, but it is a significant risk. Our waterbed sort of swallowed things between the rail and the mattress so we got rid of it when we brought baby home. This is along the same lines as how wide the crib slats are, are there knobs that would catch/strangle a child with its clothes etc... May be less of an issue with cosleeping than with solo cribs just because Mom is *there*.
