I have always found this a VERY difficult personal issue--being a huge BF advocate, and working for WIC. There are many pros & cons. I see many women who would sooner cut off one of thier limbs than to put their baby to breast. I doubt no matter what approach, I will ever convince them to BF. (But believe me, I will keep trying!!!). In the meantime of changing attitudes, culture, etc., do we deny these babies "adequate" nutrition of ABM supplements (in the U.S.) that WIC (our tax $$) provides? I don't think some people realize the alternatives to not providing ABM supplements. Yes, some of these moms will turn to BF, but many of them will use cow's milk, or other homemade concoctions which will be even more risky than ABM. Are we willing to risk the health/lives of all the babies denied of BF, to try and increase BF rates? Is this the ethical route? Believe me, I am one of the LAST one's that wants to see their tax $ spent on ABM (along with most lactnetters, I am sure!). Sandy Arnold BS, IBCLC WIC BF Coordinator Bloomington, Indiana
