Hi all, I too have seen sudden drops in milk supply with the minipills are started. For example, an experienced mom four months into pumping at work, dropped to 30% of former volume within one week of starting them. I haven't seen any data about who is at risk, when, or why, but I have a theory. We know that prolactin's influence on milk synthesis declines and by 3-4 months is a fairly insignificant factor. We know that progesterone inhibits prolactin. My guess is that supply drops with minipills when mom still needs the prolactin boost from pumping or breastfeeding to maintain supply, either (1) because she is in the earlier postpartum period, rather than further out, and/or (2) her milk synthesis capacity is at the edge of acceptable ranges and she needs absolutely everything to be right. Maybe there are other factors too - this makes some scientific sense to me. THAT it happens - I believe completely. Why it happens - I don't yet have an expanation. Anyone have further ideas? Linda Smith, wishing I had one of the "Power of Love" shirts from the Chicago area LC's. Anyone know where I can get one? Dayton, OH where I'm glad I have air conditioning today.
