Breastfeeding depends on two people. I think the worst combination is a very
impatient baby and a nervous, unconfident mother. However, with a lot of
encouragement and a nursing supplementer, I have been able to get some of
these babies back to breast.
I have never used finger feeding. Our nursery supervisor is uncomfortable
with cup feeding (despite Sandra Lang's article and video and an excellent
inservice on the subject by one of our nursery nurses) and has decided that
we will not do it. I don't know if I could get permission to finger feed
with the SNS (since that is the one alternative feeding method with which she
is comfortable). However, I am wondering how much better finger feeding is
than bottle feeding. I know it involves skin rather than plastic, but we are
still inserting a discreet object into the baby's mouth. Is it worth going
after. Right now almost any baby for whom it is felt supplementation is
necessary is given a bottle. Bonnie
