I spend some time in my classes and private sessions pointing out to parents how babies were born to breastfeed--about their innate reflexes and the physical structure of their face and mouth. I then take them through the progression of feeding cues-- beginning with the subtle and progressing to the late (crying). I ask them about their "feeding cues" and the progression of hunger. What is the first sign? How do they feel when they have to wait awhile to eat? I find parents are fascinated by this information and listen well. Babies just tell us things in a slightly different dialect of the same language we already speak. Pat Predmore, RN, BSN, ICCE Lacation Counselor
