Bumble Bee Economics is a fantastic book written by the Vermont scientist Bernd Heinrich. C.D. Michener's 'The Social Behavior of the Bees : A Comparative Study' also has some good information on the life history patterns of bumble bees. I tried to get a colony of bumble bees going by capturing a queen in March and confining her to a chamber with some wool, a pollen ball (honey and pollen mixed and rolled into a ball), and some honey and water. I tried it twice and failed. What went wrong ?
