My sister Laureen Lawlor-Smith has a summary of Raynauds of the
nipple(including a case study written by a mother) in the next issue of
Breastfeeding Review(Journal of Nursing Mothers Assn. of Aust.) We have also
written an article on case studies of 5 women with nipple vasospasm. It has
been submitted to a medical journal for publication.......We are waiting to
hear fron them...... We have found Nifedipine useful in the dose of 5-10mg.
2-3x per day. We use the medium acting tablets(not capsules which are used
for angina) Nifedipine is highly protein bound and insignificant amounts get
into breastmilk. Most women tolerate it well although we have needed to
change a few to long acting Nifedipine(30mg.) which is better tolerated by
some women. Some of the mothers have been able to stop the drug when the
weather got warmer and others have needed to continue it for the whole time
they were breasfeeding.Carolyn Lawlor-Smith DR/LC South Australia
