Nancy: I'm sure that you will get about 100 reponses to your message. First of all, if the baby has been gaining 50 grams per day since birth, that is much more than "getting something", that is a one pound gain in 10 days! Did I understand you correctly? If that is so, your description of baby sounds very much to me as if your Mom has a really strong let-down reflex and if the figure of the weight gain is correct, than clearly the baby is taking in quite a lot in those few minutes. I think that your compatriots are the experts on checking to see if there is an overactive let-down reflex (does the Mom show any signs of this?) etc. If the situation seems to be an overactive reflex, there are certainly many alternatives such as taking the baby off the breast as soon as the milk lets down so that the strong spray doesn't cause the baby to overreact so much, nursing the baby "uphill", etc., nursing one breast at a time. I learned what to do about this from the Australians, so you should have help at hand, but I remember being quite concerned with the first baby I saw with this particular type of mother -- baby couldn't seem to get far enough away and mom thought that the baby didn't want the breast. Don't know if this is any help to you.
