Hi to all, Okay have you heard this or should I say can you top this one?? I was making rounds on my mothers this am. I walked into a room and a bottle of ABM was on the baby bed. I said to the mother, I see you have some formula, are you having problems with the breastfeeding? She said no, but my doctor said I need to give formula until my milk comes in because" when you have a C. Section it takes longer for the hormones to work". This mother had been breastfeeding just fine and the baby was doing great. The baby had many voids and several stools since birth. Yes, her milk was not in but the baby was only 37 hrs old. So you get the picture, the mother or dad were now giving this baby 1-2 oz of formula every 3-4 hrs. I tried to tell the parents the baby was doing fine and really didn't need the formula, and the parents countered with but the doctor said... I also explained to the parents it really didn't matter how the baby was delivered; vaginal birth with forceps, breech, face presentation or by C. section with classical incision etc., the milk would usually come in about 48 hrs.later plus or minus a few hours. So if a mother had a precip delivery in the hospital parking lot would she have milk by the time she was transported into the hospital?? <G> Jan Aken Rn IBCLC
