Andrea asked for suggestions for putting a baby to sleep on his back when the mother chooses not to sleep with her baby.
One technique that I have found useful is to nurse the baby to sleep while lying on a mattress on the floor. When the baby has finished nursing, have the mother wait until the baby is really in a deep sleep before gently moving away and going back to her own bed. Dr. Sears' book on Nighttime Parenting is a great resource for mothers of little night-owls. It goes into detail about sleeping patterns in general and what is normal for a breastfed baby.
Hope this helps.
