Yesterday, the March 1996 issue of Sesame Street Parents arrived in my mail. I reviewed it for health related articles. This time the article was on asthma, called "Asthma Alert" by Carl Sherman. It indicates that there has been a dramatic rise in cases of asthma in children. "Between 1982 and 1992, the childhood asthma rate rost 58 percent..." It also says (in the leader) that "Despite new research and more sophisticated treatments, medical science has not been able to curtail the growth of this baffling epidemic." The article cites heredity and environmental problems as underlying causes, and nowhere mentions early exposure to foods other than human milk as a possible cause. Nor does it mention the reduction in asthma and its allergenic triggers in breastfed children. Most of the article addresses how to "manage" the disease, treatment programs, removing allergens from the house, and choosing a doctor.
