Just to bring you all up-to-date and to say THANK YOU to those who replied to me privately (and publicly) on what to do. The mother who rented the pump for 1 week broguht it back after 3 days and said she really only used it three times in 2 days. It seems she went home and thought about my questions and explanations of how breast works and what breastmilk does (compared with dairy foods!she ain't no cow!!) and she decided that she was not going to starve her baby any longer with pedialyte. So she began the first day giving him the breast every other feed, and the next day every 2 out of 3. Guess what!? He was: a) a lot happier! b) no longer fussy and sleepless at night c) his nose is a LOT better (she didn't say whether she squirted milk in his nostrils or not) d) she is no longer uncomfortably full. Hurrah for common sense! FWI: I chose to simply inform the doc she had rented a pump as a result of advice not to feed her own milk, even though it is NOT a dairy product--was How I phrased that. Have no idea whether it will make any difference, but decided not to ask for any info back. Perhaps time and thinking will open his eyes, too, particularly when she brings him back and he is in blooming good health. We shall see...
