I am not a lactation professional, so I subscribe to Lactnet to "just lurk" in hopes of learning more. I am a law student with a strong interest in family law, especially as it relates to breastfeeding issues. However, I need some help and I hope that I won't be considered completely out of line by asking in this forum. I can't seem to find a truly pro-BF pediatrician in our area. While I was waiting to see our ped. the other day, I could hear the entire conversation she had with a patient in the examining room next to us. She was recommending that a new mom begin to supplement her breastfed two week old with the Similac and Playtex nurser samples that she "just happened" to have on hand in the office. Her stated reason was that, although the baby hadn't lost any weight, had no health problems and was obviously getting enough fluids, he hadn't yet gained any weight. I was so disgusted that I left and I don't want to go back. I am exclusively breastfeeding five month old Jane and I plan to let her wean herself whenever she is ready, even if that means nursing for several years, and we do plan to have another. We really need to find a pediatrician who supports breastfeeding and who knows what she/he is talking about. Is there any kind of national "baby friendly" docs list? We live in East TN. If anyone has any recs, please e-mail me privately. Thank you. Katie Allison Granju Knoxville, TN
