For all of you vitamin fans, the National Cancer Institute(part of NIH), announced last week that in an NCI funded study of 18,314 men and women was stopped when data revealed that vitamin A and beta carotene produced a 28% increase in the risk of lung cancer and a 17% increase in risk of all deaths compared to those taking placebos. The dose of beta carotene in this study was 30 mg/day. This study mirrored similar data from a Finnish study with over 30,000 males. In another study of 22,071 male physicians, data show that beta carotene neither prevents heart disease or cancer. Therefore, numerous studies now show taking extra beta carotene can be very hazardous. Sorry guys, maybe we should just eat leafy veggies instead and leave the high dose vitamins alone.
