>>You mentioned two cyperspace sources of brstfdg help. We are updating our facilities breastfeeding resource sheet and I'm thinking these resources should be on it. My problem is that I'm a cyperspace novice. How does one hook up with the two references you mentioned. Where those the "addressess"?<< You could call them addresses if you wish; they are the names AND "addresses" of newsgroups. For those who are not aware, newsgroups have a similar purpose but work differently from listserves. Lactnet is a listserve, and as such all the group mail is delivered to your personal "mailbox". With a newsgroup, however, all the mail goes to the newsgroup, which operates like a bulletin board. You "subscribe" to the newsgroup to access it, and you go online to look at it, unless you log it in some manner for off-line reading. This means that no mail piles up in your box; it also means that, depending on your "news server", old postings are automatically eliminated after a certain time interval. So you can choose when you want to read and when you don't, but if you skip some time, you may miss some posts as they are dropped off to make room for new ones. Misc.kids is a very popular hierarchy. There is misc.kids, the main and largest group, then subgroups such as misc.kids.pregnancy, misc.kids.health, and now misc.kids.breastfeeding. I participated heavily in the .health and .pregnancy groups before lactnet came along and stole all of my time! Alt.support.breastfeeding is under the "alternatives" heirarchy. While it was around first, I suspect that it will go by the wayside as the more popular misc.kids picks up traffic for the breastfeeding sub-specialty. To subscribe to the groups, find the "newsgroups" section of your internet service. On aol, this is keyword: INTERNET, then select "newsgroups", then "expert add" to subscribe to a group that I already know the name of. Then, all you do is open that group once you are subscribed and it "comes up" on your newslist, and away you go! Notes and replies are similar, but not identical to, a listserve. On my generic account, I go into my PINE program, select, "newsgroups", and then use the "subscribe" command to enter the group I want to join. Once I am subscribed, all I need do is go to "newsgroups", and the name of my group will be listed for me to enter whenever I want. If you have the right kind of software, you can download your newgroups like your mail, but I've never learned how to do that; I work online for newsgroups, so spend less time on them. I hope this helps! -Lisa Marasco, IBCLC [log in to unmask] / [log in to unmask]
