I am very interested in the discussion about normal infant output during the first days of life. Our hospital does not have a protocal, in fact, often, I think I am the only one that pays attention to output. Stool and urine output is very important, but is only one variable to consider when evaluating hydration status in newborns. What about weight loss. I have found that 3-4 ounces per day means the baby is doing well. Our protocal states that a breastfeeding consult is necessary if the baby looses more than 5 ounces in 24 hours. I have been questioning the relationship between stool and urine output and hydration. Our c-section babies often seem to have 4-5 stools and frequent wet diapers during the first 24 hours. This output could not be related to intake. I often see babys that have lost more than 10% of their body weight and yet do not seem dehydrated and guess what? They are usually having frequent stools. I must confess that presently I'm glad our hospital isn't trying to develop a protocol.
