Jill, You mentioned a mom of a two-month-old who had gone back to her job outside the home. Her babe seemed fine when he received expressed milk from a bottle. When he fed directly from mom (for about ten minutes), he seemed to suffer with gas pains. Did you ask the mom about burping the baby and holding him upright for ten minutes or so after breastfeeding? Does Grandma hold him, rock him, otherwise do anything in a different way? Maybe the mom is so busy working outside the home and coming home to at-home work that she is rushing the feeding sessions. Are there times when her baby doesn't have gas? Is there a difference between morning, evening, and night feedings? Try playing detective. Keep giving the mom positive feedback and listen to everything that is going on in her life. It sounds like she's being a *good mom* and you want to help her keep breastfeeding as part of her maternal role. Becky Engel, RN, IBCLC
