Diane, In my experience, some babies bite when (1) their heads are still quite molded or asymmetric. This is probably nerve compression -they probably have headaches. I've had tremendous success with a local D.O.'s therapy when there is any cranial bone asymmetry, prominent or overrriding sutures or molding beyond 1 week of age. (2) birth injury itself can cause a headache, and I think some kids bite because it stops the head pain. Try different postures such as upright and possibly cool cloths on the baby's head - might help relieve some subtle swelling. (3) Another theory is they're trying to keep nasty stuff out of their mouth, like rigid objects - sort of a control issue. I've had good luck with gentle cupfeeding because I think it gives the baby more control over intake. (4) In any case, keep this baby off the nipple - no sense in damaging tender tissue! My personal recommendation is pump and cupfeed very respectfully (nothing to clamp down on) and wait. Linda Smith, BSE, FACCE, IBCLC Dayton, OH
