There is an article in the Sept. 1995 issue of Journal of Human Lactation about using cabbage leaves to treat engorgement. "A Comparison of Chilled and Room Temperature Cabbage Leaves in Treating Breast Engorgement", by Roberts, Reiter, and Schuster. To quote from the conclusion of the article, "Cabbage leaves may offer some relief for discomfort of breast engorgement.......It is not necessary to chill the cabbage leaves before using them, since chilling has no effect on the efficacy of the treatment." The sample size for the study is quite small, only 28 women. Ellen Vegh, LLLL Pittsburgh, PA
