Kris: Although I am no expert on the potential effects of this type of
selenium overdose, there seems to be very little need for concern about
breastfeeding if mom's selenium levels are now normal. After all, the
baby had its greatest exposure early on in the pregnancy, and decreasing
amounts throughout the pregnancy. As far as the ANA is concerned, I
know of no contraindication to mothers with lupus to breastfeed unless they
are on medications which are not compatible. In this mother, it isn't
clear whether the high ANA is lupus or not, but regardless it should not
contraindicate breastfeeding. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
