In a relatively recent LLL "New Beginnings" a mother detailed her experience with excuses for not doing jury duty. As I understand it, the valid reasons for being excused are based on state law and vary from state to state. This mother was in Virginia. As I recall, she was told that she could only use breastfeeding as an excuse for a 6- or 12-month period, and then would be expected to serve. (Sorry I don't remember the complete details.) When she was called again, she protested that separation from her child would probably result in a breast infection (she had had problems with them), and was told that she could get a medical excuse based on a letter from her doctor, which she did. Again, sorry I don't have the details handy, but I've given my back issues of New Beginnings away to a pregnant lady...(my cousin). Margaret K.K.
