I've seen very aggressive grooming behavior that is similar to what was originally described (allo-grooming). I've seen this in queenless observation hives and in queen-right ones, as well as in full-sized colonies. This is why I mentioned grooming behavior as a possible reason for the activity. Some papers were describe this behavior. I don't have them right now, but would gladly send anyone the citations.
