Dear Laura: I tried to send this to you directly but it was returned twice so I am sorry to bore other lactnetters who have heard this before. Just to let you know it has been done with regards to the development of a credit course for professionals and I am not the only one who has done it. I presented a poster exhibit at the ILCA conference about the credit course developed and taught at the University of Ottawa last fall and again in the intersession this year. It is called Promoting and supporting healthy lifestyles:Breastfeeding. It was taught to nurses and nursing students initially as an elective course the second time I had one non nurse in the class. The course is thirty-nine hours of theory and six clinical hours, this is what is allowed for a half credit course. The students loved it. The pre/post test demonstrates significant learning from all groups, i.e. students, non postpartum nurses and postpartum. It contains everything from class outline, objectives, midterm and final papers, extensive bibliography and a resource list for slides, texts and videos. This course was made available to all schools of nursing in Canada, however, non so far will teach it in its entirety, but many said they would adapt parts of it to existing courses, so while the ideal would be to have it within the basic programs, at least those interested or already working in the area will take it and if they are working on their degree they get a credit.
