-- [ From: Nancy Coulter * EMC.Ver #2.10P ] -- Can any one help with this? I received a request for information about breastfeeding chances for a mother with hyperprolactinemia. The woman is 30 weeks gestation and had a prolactin level of 47 at 26 weeks, 103 at 30 weeks (which don't sound out of line to me). The obstetrician is questioning whether or not she will be able to breastfeed. I don't know the cause of the patient's hyperprolactinemia but I will try to find out. The obstetrician did say that the patient was off bromocriptin which was used for infertility due to the hyperprolactinemia. I read the section in Lawrence about hyperprolactinemia but it was not clear to me. Lawrence says "If a woman has acheived pregnancy with hyperprolactinemia, postpartum lactation is possible." Is this even with Bromocriptine treatment? How probable? What complications? Have any of you had any experience with this or have any information I can give the obstetrician about breastfeeding? Thanks in advance, Nancy Coulter, RN, MSN, CLC Granada Hills, CA 91344
