Dear Sharon: Lactose is made in the breast, so Lactaid in the mother's diet would not help. I received a phone call from a mother who had been advised to wean because there was lactose in the stool and the MD wanted the baby put on soy formula. (She eventually took the baby for cranial-sacral work--that baby had unbelievable cranial compression--1 ear lower and forward of the other, etc...) I suggested that if lactose were such a problem that she express some HM, put some lactaid into it and feed it to the baby at the beginning of the feed. I figured it probably wouldn't hurt and would be less harmful than weaning. Maybe some of the physicians and pharmacists out there could speak to this issue better than I. This mother did NOT do this. She just kept on breastfeeding. I HAVE NO IDEA if this would work-- just thinking on my feet (or bahunka, actually) Queen Idea
