Kathleen, I know you have received many excellent comments on how to handle the dietitian who feels formula and breastmilk are equal, but I just have to put in my two cents worth. It's unfortunate that this RD showed her ignorance in this way. She apparently doesn't know the first thing about breastfeeding and its many benefits, of which some are still unknown. Her reaction brings some questions to mind. First about what age is she? Is she an older dietitian who was grandfathered in as an RD? Did she or someone close to her have a bad experience with breastfeeding? Does she feel guilty about something related to breastfeeding? She sounds so narrow-focused. It's really too bad and unfortunately this kind of attitude crosses all occupations and classes. I also agree with all who have asked the question, why should breastfeeding have to prove anything? It's been around since man. It should be up to the formula companies to show they can even be a good substitute for breastfeeding. Another comment, too, is that breastfeeding doesn't put the demands on the mother that pregnancy does. As far as "sacrificing" the mom, I quite disagree. With all the health benefits the mother receives from breastfeeding, how can this person even come up with this lame excuse. Well, now that I've rambled on for a while, I'll stop. Good luck!
