Jan states>>I wonder if the current parenting program that is in a lot of
churches which relies on strict scheduling of feeds (parent controlled
feeding), playtime, nap time, & diaper changing (believe it or not), will
ultimately result in major problems down the line with food issues? It
hasn't been around long enough to see anything but immediate results. I
worry particularly about anorexia in teenage girls who were controlled
with/without food as babies/toddlers.<<
Anorexia is a control issue for many suffers. I have also heard anorexics
say they *don't deserve* to eat. Poor self esteem is a real problem in this
disease.
I wonder about overeating issues as well. Many of the people I have met in
out hospital's obesity program-- especially the morbidly obese- relate
feelings of being starved as children (not only for food but for love and
attention).
Erikson says the developmental task of the first year is trust verses
mistrust. A baby has to learn to trust that his needs will be met. If we
could just convince people that unmet needs will result in harm.
